Rabies is a viral disease that affects the spinal cord and brains of mammals, it is mostly transmitted from a rabid animal and also through and open wound. Though rabies is preventable, it has a 100% vitality rate.
HOW CAN MY DOGS GET RABIES?
Basically, rabies is gotten from wild/stray bats, dogs, raccoons, etc. rabies can also be transmitted from an infected animal through bites and open wounds through licking so the best bet is to visit a veterinarian immediately after your dog gets bitten by another dog you are not sure of its vaccination status
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS TO SHOW MY DOG HAS BEEN INFECTED WITH RABIES
Rabies infection typically progresses through several stages, it’s important to note that the duration and progression of these stages can vary among individual animals. Here are the general stages of rabies infection:
Incubation stage: This stage can last from a few weeks to several months, depending on various factors such as the location of the bite and the distance to the brain. During the incubation stage, the virus multiplies near the site of the bite without producing any visible symptoms.
Prodromal stage: The prodromal stage typically lasts for 2 to 3 days. At this point, the virus has reached the central nervous system, and the dog may display changes in behavior and temperament. Common signs include restlessness, anxiety, irritability, and a desire to be alone. Some dogs may also experience fever, loss of appetite, and a sense of unease.
Furious stage: The furious stage is characterized by increased aggression and excitability. The dog may become restless, hyperactive, and exhibit unprovoked aggression. There might be a notable change in the dog’s behavior, such as excessive vocalization, biting at objects or people, and even attacking without warning.
Paralytic stage: As the virus continues to affect the nervous system, the dog enters the paralytic stage. Muscles, particularly in the hind legs, become weak and paralyzed. The dog may have difficulty walking, exhibit a wobbly gait, or even become completely paralyzed. There may also be difficulty swallowing and excessive drooling.
IS RABIES PREVENTABLE OR CURABLE?
Rabies does not have a cure but it is 100% PREVENTABLE through vaccination. Once your dog has been bitten by an animal you are not sure of its vaccination status, the best bet is to visit your veterinarian.
